University College of Bahrain celebrated Bahrain National Day and the 13th Anniversary of His Majesty King Hamad's Accession to the Throne. The event was organized by the UCB Student Council in association with the Student Affairs department with attendance of the faculty members and administrative staff at the university.
The celebration included many entertainment and youthful activities particularly pointing out the traditional values and culture of Bahrain. Two tents were put up at the entrance of Saar Hallwith lot of interesting activities such as traditional coffee, decorated cupcakes, traditional food, basket weaving and Henna designing which are the essential part of Arab culture and tradition. Traditional bazars were also set up, where students actively participated in selling items like Bahrain badges, flags, wrist bands, jackets, caps etc. The students and staff were then invited for the Big Lunch, where, traditional food was served as part of Bahrain National Day.
On the other hand, the Chairman of UCB, Dr. Khalid Al Khalifa asserted that university is keen to celebrate the national events and occasions, pointing out that this celebration came to express the management, staff and students’ loyalty, belonging to Bahrain and love to the wise leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. He also appreciated the efforts of UCB Student Council members and the Student Affairs department for organizing such a colorful event.

UCB in association with the U.S Embassy organized a special LED lights workshop for the Graphic Design students on December 9, 2013 at UCB campus. The U.S Embassy hosted two Associate Professors from the University of Denver, Mr. Chris Colemen and Ms. Laleh Mehran to conduct the workshop.
The workshop attempted to focus on the theme “Electronics for Artists’. Mr. Chris Coleman and Ms. Laleh Mehran briefed about the creative application of electronic technology relevant to media and fine arts involving both electronic principles and hands-on application. They also discussed about new trends in the filed such as light sculpting, W3FI, CNC machine and their advantage over conventional Graphic design techniques. The W3FI is a social movement, a philosophy, a path to responsible connectivity between our online/offline lives and to each other. The workshop emphasized on the fact that W3FI exists in real and digital spaces, educating and linking people online and offline.
“Wifi describes the invisible internet network that allows us all to connect to the global marketplace and idea space to W3FI so it’s a space that we’re all collectively existing in. It’s about how we exist together, and how we affect each other and how we shape each other’s lives in this new space”, commented Mr. Chris Coleman.

With more than 60 designers and organizations, UCB Graphic Design Department participated in the Bahrain International Design Week (BIDW) held under the patronage of Industry and Commerce Minister Dr. Hassan Fahkro on 3rd -5th December 2013 at the Bahrain International Exhibition & Convention Centre.This exhibition was aimed to collect local and regional effort in design field to showcase the latest developments in jewelry design, fashion, architectural design, decoration, and graphic design by international and local designers.
The UCB Graphic Design team was led under the guidance of Ms. Lillian Hallak, Ms. Haifa Yaseen and Ms. Sarah Gassoub. The BIDW was a platform for the students to demonstrate their skills to the international market. Apart from showcasing the skills and designs, UCB team also participated in the fashion show and conference held to discuss the reality of design in the present and future challenges and new trends in design field. “BIDW was a great opportunity for all of us to explore the field of design in all its aspects such as landscaping, information technology and architecture. It was a real time learning experience for our students”, commented Senior faculty Graphic Design, Ms. Lillian Hallak.
Apart from Universities and educational firms in Bahrain, the exhibition also provided an opportunity for businessmen, investors, new companies and consumers to see the three key sectors including personal design, living design and support services for the design industry under one roof.

The General Organisation for Youth and Sports (GOYS) kick-started the ninth edition of the Bahrain Universities Model United Nations (BUMUN) Conference on November 28-29 2013.The two-day conference continued at The Gulf Hotel and was held under the patronage of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sport Chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee President HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
BUMUN represents a station that briefs youths about the most prominent events that pertain to the world in the current period. This year, the conference highlighted problems like smoking, European debt crisis, impacts and environmental consequences of nuclear energy and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. It also determined the required legal standards for international intervention in order to bring peace upon the world, and therefore to discuss, study and provide appropriate solutions according to the participants’ vision to those issues.
Among the 24 local and non-local Universities participated in the conference, UCB presented one of the big team consisting of 13 representative delegates, where Minister of State Information Affairs H.E. Mrs. Sameera Rajab, UNIC Security Council Director Mr. Nejib Friji and Director of Assessment & Environmental Control Mr. Mirza Khalaf were present. Apart from the participation, UCB enjoyed the privilege to introduce the new BUMUN Secretary General Ms. Noora Al Balooshi, a Business Administration final year student at UCB. Omar Turk, Suleman Turk, Mohammed Majdi, Karim El Sayed and Nada Mohammed were other delegated from UCB in the General Assembly whereas Maher Jammal, Rami Elayyan Dheya Alia and Wassim Whebe were part of the Security Council. Omar Turk was awarded “Best Delegate” and will be one of the chairs in the BUMUN 2014 as the Security General of the General Assembly.

The Graphic Design Department at the University College of Bahrain (UCB) organized a field visit to Al Ayam newspaper on Nov 7, 2013 to learn more about newspaper printing and production methods. The team consisting of 8 students was led under the guidance of Graphic Design Senior Lecturer Ms. Lillian Hallak.
The visit was an exclusive opportunity for the students to come across the practical experiences that they have learned theoretically in the classrooms. At the Printing Press, they discovered the technical requirements needed to turn their designs into printable material, as they understood the relationship between digital files, films, plates, proofs, and how to set the right requirements for offset printing in addition to the post press procedure.
“The filed visit was a real learning experience for our team. The students could practically see and learn various aspects printing and designing process in the newspaper. We are thankful to UCB and Al Ayam for providing us with this opportunity”, commented Ms. Lillian Hallak, senior lecturer, Graphic Design Department.

The FAA(Finance Accreditation Agency) which is commissioned by the Central Bank of Malaysia, signed the Cooperation Agreement with University College of Bahrain (UCB) in the presence of H.E. Dato’ Ahmad Shahizan Abdul Samad, Malaysian Ambassador to Kingdom of Bahrain and Dr. Khalid Al Khalifa, Chairman of UCB on November 3, 2013 at UCB, Manama Bahrain.
The agreement is set to encourage the development and delivery of quality learning of academic programmes for the Islamic Finance and Finance related programmes in Bahrain. FAA CEO, Dr Amat Taap Manshor said, the agreement would enable two organizations to cooperate in enriching the development of talent of the finance professionals in Middle East generally and Bahrain in particular. The cooperation clearly shows UCB’s commitment towards quality of its Islamic Finance programs and the education that has been offered in UCB. This agreement was initiated and mediated by Dr. Sutan Emir Hidayat, Assistant professor at UCB and in order to proceed with the accreditation process, Dr. Khalid Al Khalifa appointed Mr. Imam Buchari to be the person in charge (PIE).
“In today’s highly dynamic and evolving financial system, establishing business relations to strengthen the financial institutions cannot be overemphasized. FAA enters this significant partnership to reach this goal which supports the agenda in bringing the best practices to the industry”, Dr Amat added.

UCB in association with Tamkeen Bahrain organized a special lecture for all the Business Administration students on Oct 31, 2013 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at the University College campus.
The aim of the lecture was to discover the youth entrepreneurs in Bahrain. Ms. Ashjan Al Arrayedh , a representative from Tamkeen interacted with the students and explained to them about the Mashroo3i youth entrepreneurship competition and the policies and procedures to be followed for participating in it. The one hour lecture also featured an exclusive video clip for the students which briefed about the Mashroo3i competition. The Head of Business Administration Program, Prof. Sooraj Swami was also present with his students for the lecture. The interested students can register for the Mashroo3i competition and they will beshowcasing their business prototypes during a live exhibition at the competition venue. This would provide the opportunity for the public to view the interesting business ideas in action and to witness the first-hand potential of Bahrain’s budding youth entrepreneurs.

Think Pink Day in recognition of Breast Cancer awareness was held for the Students and staff of University College of Bahrain (UCB) on October 29, 2013. In the act of spreading breast cancer awareness among students and staff, various activities and sales bazars were organized at the campus from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.
The event was supported by the UCB Student Council, Student Affairs Department and the Staff of UCB. Students from the various departments of Communication & Multimedia, IT & Business Administration set up their own individual sales stalls to attract their classmates and friends to sell Cup Cakes, Cookies, Sweets and Training suits as part of fundraising. The collected fund will be eventually handed over to the Think Pink Bahrain, the Bahrain breast cancer society. This fundraising will continue throughout the month of October.
Apart from the participation of staff and students of UCB, external vendors from Haraka, Royal media, Le Boutique, The Baker and Sharbat Bahrain were also present at the event for selling different products such as fashion jewels, trendy bags and clothing thereby helping out with raising the fund. The event was a great success and we thank all the students, staff, faculty members, media and the external vendors who supported us hosting this. We really appreciate the initiative that our students put forward to engage in such a social welfare cause”, commented Sh. Ebrahim Al Khalifa, the Executive Director, Strategic Planning & innovation. The event was open to all the UCB students, Staff and Faculty members.
UCB participated in one of the island’s biggest sporting events, the Bahrain Marathon Relay which took place at the Bahrain International Circuit on Friday October 25, with 153 teams from schools, universities, companies, hospitals and other organizations. The event is a major annual charity fundraiser organized by the Bahrain Round Table Society and the event has been running for 33 consecutive years. The money raised from this year’s marathon will go to charities including the Downs Syndrome Society, Isa Town Charity Fund and the Fellowship Society for the Blind.
The UCB team consisted of 6 current students and one staff. The race was designed with 16 legs of three kilometres which will start and finish at the Bahrain International Circuit. The team was given a rousing send-off and was greeted at the finishing line as they completed the circuit by the UCB representative members. Finally the runners were awarded with medals upon completion of the marathon relay. The UCB students as a team performed brilliantly under the captaincy of Ms. Esmat Khalid Fakhro and bagged 100th position out of the total 153 teams competed at the event within a time slot of 4 hours, 20 minutes. “The point was not to be the ultimate winners, but to represent the University College of Bahrain for a worthy charitable cause and as well as to be a play a role in contributing to the Bahraini community”, commented Sh. Ebrahim Al Khalifa, the Executive Director, Strategic Planning & Innovation.
The UCB Orientation Day 2013 was held on September 29, 2013 at the Janabiya Auditorium between 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. The newly enrolled students at UCB were briefed about the University resources and services available to them.
UCB’s Heads of Department’s delivered the welcome speech, and briefed students about each department, which included a presentation on their respective programs and department at the session. In addition to that, the students were introduced to the UCB Library facilities, Admission & Registration process and Student Affairs Department by the concerned staff. “The Orientation Day is organized at the campus during the beginning of each academic year so as to introduce the campus resources and academic facilities equipped for all the newly enrolled students and the session also helps in student to teacher and student to student interactions”, commented Sh.Ebrahim Al Khalifa, the Executive Director, Strategic Planning & Innovation.
