UCB partners with AAOIFI for MBA in Islamic Finance

Shaikh Dr. Khalid M. Al-Khalifa, Executive Chairman and Founder of UCB signed an affiliation agreement with Omar Mustafa Ansari, Acting Secretary General of the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) during the 13thAAOIFI & World Bank Annual Conference on Islamic Banking and Finance held in Radisson Diplomat, Manama, Bahrain.

AAOIFI recognized UCB as the first affiliate university allowing MBA students to register for CIPA exam through the UCB MBA admission. CIPA is one of the most prestigious professional certifications within Islamic financial industry. 

The cooperation between the institutions was initiated by Dr. Sutan Emir Hidayat, Head of Business Administration Department, UCB and Mr. Farhan Noor, Head of Professional Development, AAOIFI. This agreement means UCB MBA in Islamic finance is charted to the CIPA, AAOIFI signifying that the program is emulating 70% of CIPA modules.

Dr. Nandita Sengupta, Associate Prof. and  Head of IT Department attended AWS Summit at Ritz  Carlton,  Bahrain on  September 30, 2018,  along with the President of UCB Prof. Salah Emara. They were present for the Technical Track session and a keynote speech by Ms. Teresa Carlson, VP, Amazon Web Services. Many topics were discussed on Technical Track, like,  “Practical DevSecOps:  What Can You Do Today and  Tomorrow to Continuously  Adapt to Threats”, “An introduction to AWS”, “Microsoft Workloads on AWS”, “Introduction to VMware Cloud on AWS” and “Migrating your IT”.

Dr. Nandita Sengupta, Assistant Professor and Head of Department of IT, UCB presented her research paper, “Designing Cyber Security System for Smart Cities”, in SMART CITIES SYMPOSIUM 2018, SCS2018, held in Bahrain, 22nd - 23rd April 2018 ( In this paper, designing of two-phased cybersecurity system is designed for cloud-based smart cities. In the first phase, hybrid encryption is proposed and in second phase, machine learning based intrusion detection system is proposed to provide complete cyber security system for smart cities. Papers of this symposium will be indexed by Scopus and will be available in IET digital library.


Visit of University of Derby's Business School to UCB Campus

Delegates from University of Derby, UK visited  University College of Bahrain's (UCB) Campus on 10th of July 2018 to discuss possible cooperation between University of Derby's Business School and University College of Bahrain's Business Administration Department.

Martin Binns, Manager at the International Recruitment and Collaborations Department, University of Derby, Alexandra Charles, Head of Derby Business School, and Stephen Smith, a faculty member at the College of Business Law and Social Sciences, University of Derby represented University of Derby at the meeting. On the other hand, UCB was represented by Dr. Sutan Emir Hidayat, Head of Business Administration Department along with Faculty Members at the Department namely Dr. Abdullah Alhadrami, Dr. Saad Ahmed, and Dr. Polina Nikolou. In addition, Webster Gauhar, Director of Finance and Administration, UCB also attended the meeting as the representative of UCB's management.

There are several possible areas of cooperation between the two institutions that have been identified during the meeting. Both parties agreed to follow up with their respective leaders in order to materialize those possible areas of cooperation.


30th SASE Annual Conference, Kyoto Japan

On 23-25 June 2015, the 30th Annual SASE Conference was held in Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan. The Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics (SASE) is an international, inter-disciplinary organization with members in over 50 countries on five continents. The academic disciplines represented in SASE include economics, sociology, political science, management, psychology, law, history, and philosophy. The membership of SASE also includes business people and policy makers in government and international organizations.

One of the papers presented at the 30th edition of the conference was written by a Faculty member of University College of Bahrain (UCB), Dr. Sutan Emir Hidayat. Dr. Hidayat, who is currently the Head of Business Administration Department, coauthored a research paper with Dr. Raditya Sukmana of Airlangga University, Indonesia titled Indonesian Waqf Performance: Challenges and Opportunities. 

The paper was presented by Dr. Sukmana at a mini conference with a theme of Socio-Economic Justice, Equality, SDGs and the Constituting of Participatory Society: The Islamic Moral Economy & Finance Project.

The participants who attended the presentation well appreciated the paper of Dr. Hidayat and Dr. Sukmana. It is concluded that there is an immense potential of Waqf in Indonesia which can be used to support the country's economic growth.

Dr. Sutan Emir Hidayat, Head of Business Administration Department at University College of Bahrain moderated a session at the Bahrain Research Consortium titled "R & D in promoting SMEs growth and prosperity in a globalized economy".

The speakers at the session are Dr. Zakariya Hijris, Director of OECD in MENA Center, Mr. Ahmad Yousef Ali, Owner of DCR group, a leading SME in Bahrain, Dr. Abdulhasan Al-Dairi, President of Bahrain SMEs Society.

There was a fruitful discussion during the session. The participants were happy with the session led by Dr. Hidayat. The event was held in Wyndham Grand Hotel on 12th May 2018.

Dr. Sutan Emir Hidayat, Head of Business Administration Department at University College of Bahrain (UCB), presented his co-authored research paper (with Latifa H. Al-Qassab) titled "Corporate Social Responsibility of Islamic Banks in Bahrain: Depositors' Awareness" at the 20th International Conference on Islamic Finance (ICIF) held in Rome Italy on 3-4 May 2018. The research paper was well received by the conference's participants and Dr. Hidayat also obtained valuable feedback from the participants which can improve the paper before publication. Dr. Hidayat thanks UCB's management for the invaluable support provided. This is an example of UCB's commitment towards supporting research activities of its faculty members, Dr. Hidayat said.






Visit of Bogor Agricultural University's Rector to UCB Campus

   On 7th March 2018, Bogor Agricultural University's Rector Dr. Arif Satria and his team members visited University College of Bahrain (UCB) Campus. The rector met UCB's President Professor Salah A. Emara and Dr. Sutan Emir Hidayat. During the visit, both parties discussed ways of improving the cooperation between the two institutions. UCB and Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in November 2015. Bogor Agricultural University is ranked by QS as one of the top 100 universities in the world for agricultural related studies in 2018.



Dr. Sutan Emir Hidayat's Award

For three consecutive years (2016, 2017, and 2018) Dr. Sutan Emir Hidayat, Head of Business Administration Department of University College of Bahrain has been listed in ISLAMICA 500 as one of the 500 most influential people in Islamic Economy at the Global Scale. The award reception ceremony this year was held in Capital Club, Manama, Bahrain.

His Excellency Nur Syahrir Rahardjo, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Kingdom of Bahrain, Madam Retnani Yuniarti, Wife of the Ambassador, and Mr. Hardiyono Kurniawan, Head of Chancellery, Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Manama, were present at the ceremony as Dr. Hidayat's guests of honor. Among the awardees at the ceremony are CEO of Albaraka Banking Group, CEO of Ibdar Bank, Secretary General of AAOIFI, and Secretary General of CIBAFI.

Dr. Hidayat thanks Professor Laurent Marlière, CEO of ISFIN and publisher of ISLAMICA 500 for the opportunity to be listed in the directory. Dr. Hidayat was accompanied by his wife when he received the award.



UCB Special Need Donation Festival

The UCB PR students conducted a donation festival for people with special needs. The festival was organized in the University Campus from 11 am to 2:30 pm. The event included a fundraising donation box as well as food sales such as pizzas. To make the campaign special, the students held a raffle draw for a chance to win a ticket to Bankok, Thailand. The sales and donation funds were spent on buying wheelchairs for the disabled people at the NBB disabled center.

The head of the PR department, Dr. Amira, actively visited the event where she contributed by buying food and inviting other employees to participate.  At the end of the program, the students gathered a total of BHD 230 from food sales and donations.
